The following samples were provided by Mitch Smith. They point to optimum maturity in about 3 weeks. It is difficult to determine just when these fields will reach optimum maturity because conditions that influence pod maturity over the next three weeks can vary widely. We recommend that you take a look at these fields in two weeks and be prepared with dig if the pace of maturation was more rapid than the chart indicates or it is possible you might need to dig well after the three-week estimate right now. However, if these peanuts take three weeks to reach optimum maturity, they will be about one week earlier than what we typically see in Pitt county, on average. Most peanuts are dug sometime during and after the last week of September. These samples suggest around September 15-20.
