Current drought conditions have raised questions about whether planned sidedress or layby nitrogen (N) applications should be adjusted in corn. In most situations, the recommended approach is to stay with the planned N program. While dry soils can slow fertilizer dissolution, nutrient movement, and plant uptake, they do not necessarily reduce the crop's nitrogen requirement. As a result, growers should avoid reducing N rates simply because rainfall has been limited.
Producers should also avoid making additional N applications solely because the crop is showing signs of stress or because previously applied fertilizer appears unavailable. Drought conditions often delay nutrient uptake and crop response, but much of the applied nitrogen remains in the soil and can become available once adequate moisture returns.
As long as the crop maintains reasonable yield potential, sidedress nitrogen remains a valuable investment. If rainfall returns and the crop recovers, adequate nitrogen will be needed to support growth and maximize yield. Therefore, maintaining the planned sidedress or layby application is generally the most agronomically sound and economically prudent strategy.
Nitrogen management should be reevaluated only when drought has caused severe and irreversible yield loss. In fields where yield potential has been substantially reduced, the economic return from additional nitrogen is likely to decline. Under these circumstances, adjustments to planned N rates may be justified, and the layby nitrogen rate can be modified to reflect the crop's revised yield potential.
However, unless drought has substantially reduced yield potential, large reductions in nitrogen rates are generally not recommended. Corn may still respond favorably if rainfall returns and growing conditions improve later in the season. Therefore, nitrogen rate adjustments should be based on realistic assessments of yield potential rather than on the presence of drought alone.
